At-a-Glance

As part of a school group project in late 2022, I served as the UX designer. Over one month, we tackled the challenge of helping users visualize furniture in their homes. We conducted research, designed an AR-integrated app, and provided solutions for budget-friendly home improvements.

Problem

Online shoppers struggle to envision how furniture and accessories will fit into their homes, leading to costly and mismatched purchases. Tra-it AR aims to provide a seamless solution for visualizing products in real home environments.

Solution

Transforming Virtual Shopping into Real Home Experiences

I worked with a product owner, researchers, and engineers to develop an AR app that lets users virtually place products in their homes, ensuring they fit and match seamlessly. Revolutionizing Shopping with Immersive Augmented Reality.

01

Visualize Products at Home

Users can virtually place products in their homes, ensuring they fit and complement existing items, reducing the risk of costly mismatched purchases.

02

Budget-Friendly Home Improvement

Tra-it AR helps users plan home improvement projects within budget by visualizing quantities needed and ensuring purchases align with their space.

03

Time-Saving Measurements

Eliminate the hassle of manual measurements. Users can quickly and accurately assess how products will fit in their space, saving valuable time and effort.

Process

After understanding the needs and expectations, I designed an application based on user research and industry trends. This involved creating an intuitive interface for seamless integration with e-commerce sites, implementing AR technology for realistic product placement, and optimizing for both visual appeal and functionality. I created a high-fidelity prototype.

Competitive Analysis

After conducting a comprehensive competitive analysis, evaluating strengths, weaknesses, and features of industry leaders like Ikea Place, Houzz, and Wayfair, we identified opportunities to differentiate Tra-it AR by emphasizing budget-friendly home improvement planning and user-friendly integration with various e-commerce platforms.

WeaknessesSingle-vendor lock-in; no budget planning tools.AR is secondary; heavy browsing before any visualization.AR accuracy varies; no quantity or budget planning.

User Research

I conducted supervised user research and received feedback from users that we incorporated into user personas. For example, one participant's input highlighted the need for visualizing home improvements within budget, leading us to prioritize cost-effective planning features in the app.

Goals

  • Do her first home-improvement project within budget
  • Visualize furniture before purchasing
  • Know the quantities needed for each room

Pain points

  • Money already spent on ill-fitting furniture
  • Mess created by home DIY projects
  • Time wasted on manual measuring

Sketches

I created a detailed 9-screen storyboard sketch that mapped the entire user journey, from opening the vendor's app to confirming the order and initiating the checkout process.

Wireframes

After completing research, we created a low fidelity wireframe with all of the initial features. We tried to implement all features, organized and created a full user journey and layout on this wireframe.

Final Designs

The finished flow: browse the catalogue, open an item, scan the floor, place the product true-to-scale, and add it to the cart without leaving the vendor's store.
